2024 Volvo XC40: A Trim Comparison

by Car Digest
December 26, 2023

The Volvo XC40 returns this year with a new base engine and more standard features than ever before, making the XC40 one of the most luxurious options on the market.

Comparing the 2024 Volvo XC40 Trim Levels

With three trim levels, four variations, and many features, drivers have plenty of options to unlock.

In fact, the XC40 had been named the European Car of the Year, in part because of its unique interior features. While it may slot into the compact segment, it has the storage capabilities of a much larger vehicle. Some of the most lauded ingenious details include foldout hooks for purses or bags on the glove compartment and in the rear trunk, a removable trash bin in the center console, hidden pullout storage under the front seats, and side door pockets large enough to hold a full-size laptop.

Packages & Options

Before getting into the 2024 Volvo XC40 trim levels, let’s discuss the packages offered. These are offered in the very first trim and adding them all will easily hike up the price. But how much?

First off, the Climate Package is easily the cheapest available at $550. This package adds just heated steering wheel and heated seats.

Standalone features are available, too. Leather upholstery will cost you an additional $1,100. A 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available for $800. Other options include a panoramic sunroof for $1,000 and pixel technology LED headlights for $350.

Core

So what’s actually included with the base Core trim? Actually, it’s a great number of things starting at $40,300! The base hybrid powertrain, with all-wheel drive, boasts a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 48-volt mild-hybrid system that generates 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle comes standard with hill descent control.

Interior standard features include cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory settings and heated front seats. The 12.3-inch digital driver display, a 9-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, and an eight-speaker audio system make up the front console. Additionally, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio and HD radio are all integrated, Bluetooth and USB ports are standard as well.

Other features include proximity keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a hands-free power liftgate.

The exterior features 18″ alloy wheels, aluminum roof rails, and cap-less fuel filling. Instead, a seal opens when you insert the fuel nozzle, and automatically closes when you remove it. There’s no cap to unscrew open or screw back closed.

On the safety front, the 2024 Volvo XC40 offers forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and rear parking sensors, among other things.

Recharge Core

The 2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge Core trim boasts an electric motor and an 82-kWh lithium-ion battery that generates 248 horsepower. It has an all-electric range of  293 miles. However, with the option of two electric motors and all-wheel drive, you’ll get around 254 miles.

The Recharge Core offers most of the same features as its hybrid equivalent, but the seats are a combination of synthetic leather and cloth upholstery. It also gains proximity keyless entry.

The Recharge Core starts at $52,450.

Plus

The 2024 Volvo XC40 R-Design is a sport-inspired trim. It starts at $45,200. This trim includes everything in the core model with the added addition of leather upholstery and a cargo power outlet. A passenger-adjustable passenger seat, proximity keyless entry, a garage door opener and fog lights are among the other standard additions for this trim. There’s also ambient interior lighting and a panoramic moonroof for added comfort.

Driver’s assistance features include front parking sensors, fog lights and a surround-view parking camera.

Recharge Plus

Features are the same as those in the hybrid Plus trim. The Recharge Plus starts at $55,400.

Ultimate

The 2024 Volvo XC40 Ultimate trim is the brand’s most luxurious offering, starting at $49,000.

This trim comes standard with features previously only add-ons, such as adaptive cruise control,  a 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium stereo, and pixel technology headlights. Lastly, you’ll get 20-inch alloy wheels.

Recharge Ultimate

The 2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge Ultimate offers many of the same features as the hybrid version but with the addition of Pilot Assist, an autonomous driving system. On top of that, you’ll get everything included in the Climate package: heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and battery warmer.

The Recharge Ultimate starts at $58,800.
