Ford discontinued the EcoSport crossover after its 2022 model year.
Ford has recalled nearly 19,000 SUVs because they can suddenly lose power, presenting crash risk.
Some of the 2021 and 2022 EcoSport compact crossovers’ front axle half-shafts may not be fully inserted into the transmission, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
That can potentially lead to worn-out splines or separation from the transmission, risking loss of power while in motion or unintended rolling when in park.
In October Ford inspected an EcoSport involved in a fatal crash whose half-shaft splines were stripped, an NHTSA document indicates. The vehicle’s owner said it stopped in the middle of road before it was hit from behind by a motorcycle whose occupants were killed. Ford said it’s unaware of any other injuries or fatalities potentially related to the issue.
Dealers will inspect recalled vehicles and replace the half-shafts if needed. Ford, which estimates that 3% of the vehicle population has the defect, is scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on April 7.
