Due to a software glitch, the neutral gear position may not illuminate on the instrument panel, possibly leading to unintentional rolling.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen recalled more than 60,000 electric SUVs over a missing gear indicator that increases risk of crashing.
The instrument panel on the 2021 to 2023 VW ID.4s and 2022 to 2023 Audi Q4 e-Trons and e-Tron Sportsbacks may fail to display the neutral gear position in certain circumstances. That can be a problem if the vehicle is left mistakenly in gear without the parking brake engaged.
VW estimates that just 1% of the vehicle population has the glitch, which originates in the software, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Dealers will update the brake control unit software in affected vehicles as needed. VW is scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on April 25.
Until owners bring in their vehicles for repair, they can determine if a vehicle’s parking brake is engaged if the red parking brake indicator light on the instrument panel is illuminated. In this way, they can prevent unintentional rolling.
