2024 Subaru Outback: A Trim Comparison

by Car Digest
April 19, 2024

The 2024 Subaru Outback returns for the new year with a refreshed exterior, more excellent features, and great performance. Better materials make the interior more comfortable, and the technology changes make the Outback more enjoyable to drive.

Comparing Outback Trims

There are few station wagons on the market these days, but even so, the 2024 Outback does not disappoint. Offering nine different trim levels, there’s something for everyone. We’re comparing each trim to help you determine if it’s worth upgrading.

Outback

The base 2024 Subaru Outback trim is simply called…Outback. It starts at $28,895. Even though it’s the least expensive, the base Subaru Outback has some great features that make it a quality, affordable option. First, it has Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with X-Mode, which optimizes your Subaru to drive up steep inclines or rough roads. It also comes with the Subaru Starlink multimedia package, adding dual 7-inch touch displays, a four-speaker stereo, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Finally, this trim has raised roof rails with integrated crossbars for more cargo space. The base trim even features EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. This system combines adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and forward-collision warning. Subaru says that it reduces the rate of rear-end crashes by up to 85%, according to IIHS reporting data.

Outback Premium

The 2024 Subaru Outback Premium starts at $31,195. This trim is perfect for drivers who are looking for luxury. It adds an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a six-speaker stereo, heated front seats, additional USB ports and dual-zone climate control, among other things. It also has the option of adding blind-spot detection, evasive steering, and rear cross traffic alert. Additionally, you can get hands-free power liftgate and proximity keyless entry – all for $1,400. That’s not an available option on the base Outback trim.

Another package, for $2,995, gives you everything in the previous package plus navigation and a moonroof.

Outback Onyx Editions

The Onyx Edition returns for 2024. It starts at $36,105 and adds unique exterior and interior styling. The synthetic leather upholstery is water-repellent and includes everything in the previous packages as well. Also included are dual-function X-Mode, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.

For $39,360, the Onyx Edition XT boasts a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. It also adds an eight-way power-adjustable passenger seat, heated rear seats, and front-view camera.

Outback Limited

The 2024 Outback Limited has a starting MSRP of $35,795. This trim is perfect for buyers who want a good sound system coupled with a little bit of luxury. Drivers will immediately notice the leather-trimmed upholstery, heated rear seats, and a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.  Additionally, this trim comes with conveniences like a hands-free liftgate and proximity keyless entry.

Further driver assistance features include blindspot monitoring, reverse automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, and evasive steering.

For an additional $2,060, you can add Harmon Kardon premium audio system that uses 12-speakers with a 576-watt-equivalent GreenEdge amplifier. It also adds driver attention monitoring, a heated steering wheel, navigation and a moonroof.

Outback Limited XT

For the Limited XT trim, the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine makes a reappearance. The 2024 Outback Limited XT starts at $40,195. Think of it as a cousin of the Outback Limited trim but with a more powerful engine.

Wilderness

The Wilderness trim starts at $39,96o and includes most of the regular Onyx edition’s features. The difference, however, is that it has styling elements with an outdoor theme. Additionally, it features all-terrain tires, higher ground clearance, and low-speed cruise control.

Outback Touring

Are you looking for something more luxurious than off-road-focused? The 2024 Outback Touring starts at $40,345. Even though the price is higher than the Outback Onyx Edition XT, the Outback Touring has the less powerful 2.5-liter (non-turbocharged) engine of the first three trim levels. Instead of paying for a high-performance engine, the price point here goes to amenities and convenience features. Seats are upgraded with Nappa leather and are ventilated in the front. There’s a heated steering wheel,  auto-dimming rearview mirror, a front-view camera, and garage door opener.

Chrome finishing accents dot the door handles and folding side mirrors. Drivers will also appreciate the ventilated front seats and heated steering wheel. We recommend this trim as the best bang for your buck for most buyers (who aren’t outdoor enthusiasts).

Outback Touring XT

The 2024 Outback Touring XT starts at $42,795 and has all the same standard features as the Outback Touring. The only difference is that this trim features the more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. It is worth noting that the more powerful engine lowers fuel economy to 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. That’s around a 10% drop in overall fuel economy.
